  • Monday, March 30 - Saturday, April 4: Pratt Institute’s 3rd Annual Green Week Celebration. Click the link for a full list of events, locations and times, then conclude the sustainability fest at…
  • Friday, April 3, 5:00-8:30 pm: Pratt’s Green Week Reception @ Higgins Hall.  Enjoy nosh, drinks and mix with fellow Prattsters involved in sustainability initiatives.  After mingling, join Sustainable Pratt as they host Green Party mayoral nominee, activist, and performance artist Reverend Billy from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in the Higgins Hall Auditorium. Reverend Billy will screen his satirical film What Would Jesus Buy?, and will participate in a post Q&A session.
  • Tuesday, April 7,  6:00 pm:  PHPO Student Meeting will be held at Pratt Manhattan directly following the Real Estate course.  (Room TBD)  We will discuss elections for the next group of PHPO officers, the PHPO budget and the upcoming Career Mixer.
  • Friday, April 10, 5:00-7:00 pm: PIPSA Monthly Happy Hour!  The Pratt Institute Planning Student Association has invited GCPE students to enjoy $1 off drinks and free bocce ball @ Floyd.  Take a break from your studies and throw one down the hatch, and one down the court with your Higher Ed family.
  • May 18, 11:00 am: Pratt Institute Commencement @ Radio City Music Hall.  Graduates, make sure you are ready to walk!  Instructions on ordering caps and gowns and receiving your guest tickets can be found here.

  • As you may have already heard, the National Trust Online Forum has recently changed their login page.  They are now requiring all members of an organization to create their own individual logins and passwords.  PHPO has a paid group membership, enabling all of us to take advantage of it’s services which includes access to preservation research tools, career opportunities, discounts on books and much more.  Please contact a PHPO officer for further instructions to gain membership access.

Recently in Pratt Preservation…

  • As usual, the spring semester has been a very busy for our students.  The first year class has been juggling courses in  Preservation Law and Policy, Architecture and Urban History, Concepts of Heritage and Real Estate Development.
  • The second year students are also taking the Real Estate Development course, in addition to studying Brooklyn Community District 8 in the Preservation and Planning Studio, as well as preparing their thesis papers and presentations for the Preservation Colloquium course.

Interesting & Upcoming 

  • November 12-16: 5 Dutch Days 5 Boroughs celebrates the continuous influence of Dutch arts and culture in New York City.  Take the opportunity to travel across the city to take advantage of special tours, lectures, exhibits and performances.
  • Monday, November 17, 6:30-8:30 pm:  Imagine Coney, an initiative by the Municipal Art Society to organize  a team of world-class architects, engineers, amusement designers and creative producers to participate in a charrette to develop new ideas for activities, designs, events and interim uses for Coney Island.  The team will present their initial ideas to the public Monday evening at BAM Cafe, 30 Lafayette St, Brooklyn.  A vital public meeting to attend if you are concerned about the future of Coney Island.
  • Thursday, November 20, 4-? pm:   PHPO proudly presents our first (annual?) Preservation Pub Crawl!  Please join us on a tour of several historic watering holes led by architectural historian Francis Marrone.  Space is limited due to the intimate size of these locations; we can only accommodate the first 20 participants to RSVP on our evite site .  If you did not receive an evite email for the event within the past 24 hours, please notify us asap.  The event is open to all PHPO members.

Recently in Pratt Preservation…

  • A small group of second year students participated in the National Trust for Historic Preservation Conference.  With the help of funding from the Pratt Student Activities Board, we traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma and spent a week touring, networking and participating in learning sessions with Preservationists from all over the country.  You can read a brief blog about our experience here.
  • In late October, a designation hearing was held at the Landmarks Preservation Commission in regards to our very own homestead, the Pratt Institute Manhattan Campus building at 144 West 14th Street.  Alumni and current GVSHP Director of Preservation and Research, Elizabeth Solomon spoke in favor of the measure as well as current Pratt planning/preservation student B. Bingham who spoke on behalf of the Municipal Art Society.

  • Saturday, October 11, 11:00 am: Municipal Art Society Walking tour - New to New York: Duffy Sqaure to Murray Hill .  Explore soaring towers and more intimate designs will be considered, including buildings by Arquitectonica, Cook+Fox Architects, Michael Graves and Renzo Piano. Leader: Matt Postal, architectural historian.
  • Sunday, October 12:  last chance to visit Paul McCarthy: Central Symmetrical Rotation Movement exhibit at the Whitney. The show focuses on a core strand of McCarthy’s work: the use of architecture to create perceptual disorientation in the viewer through spinning mirrors, rotating walls, projections, and altered space.
  • Tuesday, October 14, 6:30 - 8:00 pm:  New York City Trivia Nigh t sponsored by the Municipal Arts Society.  An evening of New York City trivia: history, architecture, culture, and more. Come test your knowledge about the city you call home, meet new people, and lift a glass to New York.  Who wants to join the Pratt team?

  • Monday, October 13: deadline for notification of participation to PHPO for the National Trust for Historic Preservation Conference .  Please notify an officer by the end of the day Monday if you plan on traveling to Tulsa with PHPO for the conference.  PHPO will fund the registration fee and lodging for interested students, flight not included.

Last Week in Pratt Preservation

  • Last Monday, The Municipal Art Society hosted a panel discussion: Solutions for Preserving New York’s Neighborhood Businesses.  Pratt faculty members, Vicki Weiner and John Shapiro were on the panel and discussed the hard realities of surviving as a small business in New York City and tools that are available to support such vital community underdogs.  If you missed it, don’t fret!  Click here to read more and see video from the presentation.
  • Thursday afternoon a group of students met for the years first PHPO meeting.  We discussed the upcoming National Trust Conference in Tulsa, partnering with the AIAS Organization in spring to visit Falling Water, Career Day in Spring, and tossed around additional ideas for gatherings and events.  We also discussed the value of attending preservation events outside of the Pratt realm and shared recent discussions with professionals in the field who have expressed desires to continue to hire Pratt preservation students.  Thanks to all who participated!

This Weekend, Take time to Play

  • Sat: The East Village Community Coalition’s 2nd Annual Lower East Side Kids’ Art Bike Parade  watch in awe as the youngest people in the LES neighborhood show the entire world how fun and healthy it is to enjoy non-polluting self powered transportation with a little added imagination.  11 am - 2 pm, Tompkins Square Park.
  • Sat & Sun: openhousenewyork 6th Annual Weekend , America’s largest architecture and design event with over 200 sites open and free to the public.  Use the search options at the top of the linked page to view the programs and sites and plan your visits.  Hours vary per location.
  • Sun: The 34th Annual Atlantic Antic Street Festival spanning 10 blocks of Atlantic Avenue, from 4th Ave to Hicks St.  Participate in New York’s number one street festival, offering something for everyone! 10 am - 6 pm.
  • Sun: Municipal Art Societies Carroll Gardens Walking Tour , perhaps no neighborhood in Brooklyn satisfied as many of Jane Jacobs criteria for a successful urban place. $15, $12 MAS members, payable at meeting point. 2 pm. Meet at NE corner of Smith and President Streets.

  • Monday, October 6, 6:30-8:00 pm:  The Municipal Art Society will be hosting a Panel Discussion: Solutions for Preserving New York’s Neighborhood Businesses.  The discussion will address the increasing threat chain stores and banks are on the unique character of diverse neighborhoods throughout New York City. The panel will include Pratt GCPE faculty Vicki Weiner and John Shapiro.  At the West Side Institutional Synagogue, for more information and to reserve your spot, clicky!
  • Saturday, October 18:  Pratt’s GCPE faculty and the Municipal Art Society’s Planning Center will host an afternoon of planning education sessions for the entire GCPE.  The sessions will model MAS’s Livable Neighborhoods Program and will offer classes in all things planning-NYC: zoning, EIS/ULURP processes, getting and using NYC data, economic development, historic preservation, and 197-a planning.  Sign up sheet available soon inside the 4th floor Pratt Manhattan Office.
  • Thursday, November 20:  PHPO Sponsored Historic Pub Crawl, Thursday, November 20.  More info to come!  We hope to see some Alumni and Faculty in the mix…

Starting Things of with a Bang

  • During the first week of school, a small PHPO group visited Philip Johnson’s Glass House in New Canaan Connecticut.  We were led on a two-hour tour of the 47-acre site and house.  Read about our trip and see pictures on the PHPO blog.  After the tour we joined fellow GCPE students and faculty for a welcome mixer at Habana Outpost in Fort Greene, Brooklyn for drinks, food, mingling in a friendly and sustainable good environment.  It was great to see the preservation students out in full force!
  • Last Sunday, September 14, a few students participated in a tour of Coney Island sponsored by the Historic Districts Council led by Melissa Baldock, Kress/RFR Fellow for Historic Preservation and Public Policy at the Municipal Art Society and architectural historian Jane Cowan.  The dynamic duo presented the past, present and proposed future(s) of Coney Island.  Post tour we discussed what we learned over hot dogs at Nathan’s and a shared ride on the Wonder Wheel.

News You Can Use

  • This weekend is the last weekend to view the Buckminster Fuller exhibit at the Whitney.
  • Last call for volunteers for the 6th annual openhousenewyork weekend, October 4th and 5th.  Volunteer for a four-hour shift and receive an OHNY t-shirt, hat and button that allows front-of-the-line access at non-reservation sites and programs.  Register to volunteer by Monday, September 22.

Attn: Preservation Students

  • National Historic Preservation Conference this year will be in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Oct.21-25.  Please check your schedules and discuss your options for attendance with your instructors with conflicting courses.  If you would like to attend the conference please let a PHPO officer know ASAP.  Partial funding for the trip will be available for students through PHPO.
  • Monthly PHPO meetings:  First Thursday of every month at 12:30 pm, room 402, Pratt Manhattan Campus.
